Associate Scientist – Cell based assays for drug development – Lung

Newcells Biotech provides products and services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Our vision is to be recognised as transforming drug discovery by developing the best in vitro biology to mimic and predict how new drugs interact with human tissues and organs.

The company has unique capabilities in the development and commercialisation of 2-D and 3-D (organoid) in vitro assays focused on four distinct tissues; kidney, retina, liver and lung. We work with global pharmaceutical companies to provide important data on the safety, pharmacology and efficacy of new therapies.

We are currently looking for a talented and passionate individual to join our lung platform team and contribute to the development of complex iPSC-derived airway and alveolar models. You will work as part of a growing team of scientists and technicians to develop and characterise models, develop lung relevant analytical assays and contribute to the execution of commercial projects with our growing customer base.

This position is located at our laboratories, based in a modern campus, close to the centre of the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

-Development and validation of iPSC differentiation protocols specifically aimed at producing lung epithelial cells and their subsequent characterisation and validation

-Working within an agile team to contribute towards the development, optimisation, and validation of robust techniques, protocols and assays for commercial and R&D projects

-Working within and across assay teams to simultaneously contribute to developmental work and deliver bespoke customer projects

-Completing all work to a high standard and being accountable for the accurate execution of assigned work

-Ensuring accurate and traceable record keeping in line with company policies and project-specific requirements

-Contribute toward to management of day-to-day operations of the laboratory including stock, equipment maintenance and safety documentation

 

Person Specification

Essential:

-Bachelors/Masters degree in a scientifically relevant discipline or equivalent prior experience

-Prior experience of cell culture of cell lines and/or primary cells, preferably with prior experience with 2D- and 3D- culture models such as Transwell™/Thincert™ supports or spheroid/organoid culture

-Previous experience and knowledge in molecular biology techniques such as; DNA/RNA isolation, PCR/RT-qPCR, Western blotting, flow cytometry, ELISA, immunohistochemistry/immunocytochemistry

-Motivation and willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and the ability to be agile and prioritise workloads accordingly

-Dedicated team player with excellent verbal and written communication skills

-Excellent organisation skills, including maintenance of accurate and traceable records in-line with company procedures

Desirable:

-Previous experience in lung physiology/disease and/or epithelial cell biology

-Previous experience in the culture and/or differentiation of pluripotent stem cells

-Previous experience in co-culture systems

-Experience of in vitro drug discovery and/or toxicology

-Prior experience in GLP and following SOPs

-Prior experience in COSHH and risk assessment preparation

Associate Scientist – Cell based assays for drug development – Kidney

The company has unique capabilities in the development and commercialisation of 2-D and 3-D (organoid) in vitro assays and we work with global pharmaceutical companies to provide important data on the safety, pharmacology and efficacy of new therapies.

We are focused on four tissue platforms; kidney, retina, liver and lung.

We are looking for talented and passionate individuals to work on projects across our kidney assay platform. You will be working as part of a team of development scientists and technicians on projects with customers and on in-house programmes.

The job is located at our laboratories based in a modern campus close to the centre of the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

-Contributing to the development, optimisation, and validation of robust techniques, protocols and assays for commercial and R&D projects

-Carrying out the isolation and maintenance of a range of primary and iPSC derived kidney cells

-Responsibility for running drug transporter and nephrotoxicity assays under direction of Senior/Principle Scientist

-Working within and across assay teams to successfully deliver customer specific projects

-Accountability for the accurate technical execution of the projects

-Ensuring accurate and traceable record keeping in line with company policies and project-specific requirements

-Managing the day-to-day operations of the laboratory including stock, equipment and safety documentation

 

Person Specification:

Essential:

-Scientific graduate with a BSc/MSc in Pharmacology/Biomedical sciences or equivalent subject

-Prior experience of mammalian tissue culture

-Experienced in molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, RT-qPCR, Western blotting, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy

-Experience in IT and statistical analysis

-Demonstrate ability to efficiently learn new laboratory techniques and ability to prioritise a varied workload

-Excellent organisational skills including maintenance of accurate and traceable records

-Track-record of contributing in a team environment

-Good verbal and written communication skills

Desirable:

-Industrial experience and training in a similar role of developing and running cell-based assays

-Experience in handling human tissue

-Background in drug development/ADMET

-Experience of in vitro toxicology

-Prior experience in GLP and SOP

-Prior experience in COSHH and risk assessment preparation
