The Biosphere: Location & Facilities - Newcells

Retinal platform

An in vitro, light responsive, retinal model for accurate predictions of in vivo outcomes you can have confidence in.

Kidney platform

The most advanced near-physiological high throughput kidney proximal tubule cells (PTC) model to investigate drug transport modalities in vitro.

Lung epithelia model

Lung model

A model to investigate airway physiology, viral infection, drug safety and environmental impacts on lung airway epithelia.

Sinusoid iPSC-derived Liver model

Liver model

We are developing a model of liver sinusoid derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC).

The Biosphere: Location & Facilities

Newcells Biotech has office and laboratory facilities in The Biosphere, a purpose built complex for science-based businesses located on The Helix science campus in Newcastle upon Tyne.

This complex, which includes the Biosphere, contains a range of companies alongside leading edge academic institutes including Newcastle University, a global top 200 university, with in-depth stem cell and clinical science programs, and proximity to the University Hospital.

Newcells Biotech is a fast-growing team of global scientific and industry experts located in The Biosphere, Newcastle upon Tyne and our purpose is to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and patients. We make a difference by providing better predictions of clinical outcomes. Using our expertise in induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), cellular physiology and organoid technology, we build functional pre-clinical in vitro models of kidney, retina, liver and lung.

Newcells laboratories are configured for human class II cell culture operations where we carry out a range of analyses including:

  • Immunochemistry and qPCR
  • Flow cytometry and cell sorting
  • Confocal and electron microscopy
  • Electrophysiology
  • Radiochemical analysis
  • Single cell RNAseq
  • MESO QuickPlex SQ 120 biomarker analysis
  • Seahorse™ Mitochondrial Metabolic Assay
The Biosphere location and facilities

The Biosphere is located in the heart of the North East of England’s regional and economic capital – Newcastle, surrounded by a £1.5bn life science eco-system on Newcastle Helix, a 24-acre district that brings together a community of industry leaders, businesses, and top researchers in an internationally renowned innovation community. Newcastle is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK and a popular hot spot for innovative and ambitious life science companies
