3rd ILD Summit Highlights

If you could not attend the 3rd ILD SUMMIT 2023 in Boston, but wonder if you have missed something, here are some meeting highlights from Dr Megan Webster, our head of lung development.

About the conference : ILD Summit

The ILD Summit is a niche industry dedicated conference focussed on advancing therapies for progressive fibrosing interstitial lung diseases (ILD). This year’s conference was the first face-to-face meeting and took place in Boston.  With a smaller number of attendees, closer interactions and networking were greatly facilitated and there were numerous opportunities for scientific conversations.

Topics covered

The conference covered a wide range of topics related to ILD with sessions focused on biomarkers and predictors of progression as clinical endpoints, the use of AI techniques to understand ILD, the role of macrophages and the immune response in ILD and the importance of relevant pre-clinical models for the study of ILD. There were also sessions relating to understanding the lung microenvironment and clinical trial design for wilder ILD patient populations.

The role of macrophages in ILD and fibrosis

I was particularly interested in the talks focused on the role of macrophages in ILD and fibrosis. It was insightful to better understand the role of macrophages in disease and how targeting the macrophage population and the microenvironment open new avenues for therapeutics.

About the exhibition: Newcells booth

Our Lung fibrosis assay and small airway epithelial model were well received. We had in depth discussions with scientists about our readouts and what they would like to measure. We will be integrating their feedback into the further development of our models to make them more relevant for the study of ILD and fibrosis.

About the location :  Boston

The conference was in downtown Boston, right in the centre of the action and a short walk from the bay area. I took a trip to the local Time Out food market where you can sample some local specialities such as cream pie, lobster roll, clam chowder and Fenway Frank.
